How do I Jailbreak or Root an Android Phone?

“Just recently I purchased an Android phone and I am absolutely loving it. This phone is extremely powerful and I am interested in seeing everything it is capable of. It would also be great to customize everything about the device to really make it my own. I know some smartphones, at least the iPhone, can be ‘jailbroken’ and completely customized but I have not heard much about this process on an Android phone. Is it possible? Is it easy? Is there a downside?”

What is the Red Ring of Death and How Can I Fix it?

“My Xbox 360 console, which has been with me since launch day, has finally decided to throw in the towel. When I try to turn my Xbox, the lights around the power button flash red and the top left, bottom left and bottom right quadrants light up. I have heard about the feared ‘Red Ring of Death’ but never thought it was going to happen since my console has always worked perfectly. What does this mean and is there anything I can do to fix it? ”

How Can I prevent Hard Drive Failure?

“I was recently moving into a new home and managed to accidentally drop my computer in the process. My computer now refuses to read anything off of the hard drive and losing all of this data has been catastrophic. Outside of being more careful, how can I prevent disk failure from happening in the future? The amount of data I lost has really got me worried about hard drives failing on my other computers.”

How to Backup Your Computer Hard Drive

“I am an avid computer user but have never seen the point in backing up any of my hard drives until recently. Unfortunately, my husband had his laptop stolen and lost a good chunk of important files he needed for his job; which has caused us both a lot of excess stress. Now that my eyes have been opened, what are the best ways to start backing up data on our home computers?”

Why the Tech Center Installs Microsoft Security Essentials

Hey Dr. FixIt,

The other day I was at your store in Boston because my HP laptop had a virus, and one of the technicians told me that The Tech Center only installs Microsoft Security Essentials on customer’s computers. Why is this? Is Security Essentials better than Norton or Avast? The guy at Best Buy was really pushing me to buy Norton Anti-Virus.

Virus Protection: Paid vs. Free

“My home computer seems to be continually attacked by viruses and is starting to slow down considerably. I clearly need to find some anti-virus software but I am reluctant to pay the price for the protection. Are programs like McAfee or Norton worth the money or are there free programs available that can get the job done?

What's the Difference between HDMI and S-Video?

“I am a big gamer and am looking for the best way to hook up my PS3 and Xbox 360 to my brand new HDTV. I am currently using the component cables the systems came with, but have heard great things about HDMI cables. What are the benefit of HDMI connections and are they worth the purchase? What about other methods such as S-video?”

Is it okay for the me to run a humidifier in the same room as my PS3 during the winter? I was keeping my console in an AV cabinet to protect it, but after your last article about the YLOD I got concerned that I shouldn't be doing this. I also bought myself an Intercooler (my gf got it for me actually!). Do you think they really help? Thanks.

Dr.FixIt's picture

Hey Spence, Depends on how humid you like your home. If your keeping it at a semi normal level of humidity, I'd say there's nothing to worry about, however if you keep your home like a tropical jungle, the humidity could cause corrosion inside your PS3 (and other electronics). Also make sure that you don't have your humidifier blowing directly on your PS3. Regarding the intercooler, that will definitely help keep your PS3 cooler and could prevent it from overheating. Hope that helps!

The PlayStation 3 Yellow Light of Death

PS3 No Cover

The Sony PlayStation 3 gaming console has been on the market for several years now. It is one of the most popular game consoles ever made with sales in excess of 30 million units since its release in 2006. Only a very small percentage of these millions of PlayStations ever experience any sort of failure, amazing for a device so powerful and complicated.
